Millions of taxpayers typically file their tax return at the beginning of the year to get a refund. Until January 8, 2019, it was uncertain when refunds would be paid out due to the government shutdown that began on December 22, 2018.

Starting today, January 28, 2019, the IRS begins processing tax returns but expect delays due to the IRS staff just returning to work from the government shutdown.

The IRS expects the earliest EITC/ACTC related refunds to be available in taxpayer bank accounts or debit cards starting February 27, 2019, for taxpayers that chose the direct deposit option and have no other issues with their tax return.
